The Great Easter Vigil and First Mass of Easter is the culmination of The Easter Triduum, and marks the first sign of Christ's light and resurrection. The service starts in the dark outside church on the forecourt where the Pascal Candle is lit and blessed. The congregation then files into church, carrying unlit candles - all is still in darkness. The candles are lit one by one as the people progress through the atrium and into church to begin the Service of Light......

All Saints Arts Concert Matinée - The Cotham Ensemble

Part of the All Saints Arts Concert Matinée series

Featuring Richard Strauss's 'Metamorphosen' for string septet, a reduced version of his original work for 23 solo strings, composed in 1945.  It is a mournful and elegiac piece, expressing Strauss’s sorrow over the devastation of Germany and its culture by the Second World War.

The mood ranges from despair and anguish to hope and serenity, reflecting Strauss’s conflicting emotions, and is considered one of the masterpieces of his late period

All Saints Arts Concert Matinée - Cantadissa - vocal ensemble

Cantadissa are an enthusiastic European vocal ensemble who perform for pleasure, primarily in cathedral and church venues in France and the UK.

Bristol Early Music Festival: The Gesualdo Six - 'Queen Of Hearts'
Friday 10th May 7:30pm – 9:00pm
The Gesualdo Six open this year's Bristol Early Music Festival with a selection of Motets and Chansons from the French Court featuring four earthly queens, the Queen of Heaven, texts from the Song of Songs, and more.

Bristol Early Music Festival: Byrd's Mercy
Friday 10th May 9:45pm – 10:30pm
The Gesualdo Six feature once more in this late-night meditation.  The Bristol-based composer Huw Morgan plays slow music for organ and electronics, based on fragments of works by Tallis, Byrd and J S Bach sung by the Gesualdo Six.  It will last about 35 minutes.

10.00am-12.30pm Bristol Early Music Festival: Come and Sing Songs from the Middle Ages - with Leah Stuttard
Saturday 11th May 10:00am – 12:30pm
Leah Stuttard, medieval harpist, singer, composer and teacher, invites singers to this workshop, which does not require music-reading skills. Singing will be largely "by ear", based on medieval manuscripts.

Simon Pickard, director of the Gloucester Waites, will talk about about the origin, history and repertoire of these colourfully-uniformed street musicians who from the Middle Ages onwards provided music in towns and cities in England, Scotland and further afield.

1.45-4.45pm Bristol Early Music Festival: Worskhop for Voices & Instrument - Alison Kinder
Saturday 11th May 1:45pm – 4:45pm
Alison is a viol player with the Chelys Consort of Viols and with The Linarol Consort. She has a love of working with singers, and is the viol player for the female polyphonic ensemble Musica Secreta. Alison is an experienced and highly-regarded tutor.

All voices and instruments (strings, recorders, brass, double reeds) are welcome. Pitch A=440

The internationally acclaimed Rose Consort of Viols is joined by NOVA, Bristol’s specialist early music vocal ensemble, in works for viols and voices from the 1575 CANTIONES QUAE AB ARGUMENTO SACRAE VOCANTUR, published by Tallis and his younger protégé Byrd to promote their own music.

Recorder Workshop w. Annabel K

2024 05 Early Music Festival F
1.30-4.00pm Bristol Early Music Festival: Meet the harpsichord, for pianists and organists, with Julian Perkins
Sunday 12th May 1:30pm – 4:00pm
An opportunity to play the harpsichord with expert tuition, on the technique and expressive power of this instrument; or you can simply watch, enjoy the music, and learn.

Julian Perkins directs the Cambridge Handel Opera Company and the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Oregon; he is also a distinguished harpsichord and clavichord player, and an experienced teacher. 

This workshop will start with a brief introduction to the harpsichord. Then each performer will play a short piece (or section of a piece), and Julian will work with them, as in a masterclass. Numbers will be strictly limited to allow a reasonable amount of time for each performer. 

Observers' tickets are for audience members; and at the end of the workshop there will be an opportunity for observers to try out the harpsichord in an informal setting. 

Advance booking is essential, as numbers are strictly limited. 

Admission: £15 for performers, £5 for observers.  Free for accompanied under-16s.

This ensemble workshop explores challenging  music for experienced players with reasonable sight-reading ability, playing  F and C instruments, including Great and Contra Basses.

8.00pm Bristol Early Music Festival Finale: Early Music Cabaret
Sunday 12th May 8:00pm – 9:30pm
To round off the Festival weekend, relax with a drink and some music in a cabaret setting, and perhaps contribute some music yourself!  Individual musicians or small ensembles, are offered a five-minute spot to perform a piece composed  before the year 1700. An electronic keyboard with adjustable pitch will be provided.

The event will have a cabaret-style setting and a licensed bar from 7.30pm.

All Saints Annual Parish Retreat
Friday 17th May – Sunday 19th May
This year's retreat will once again take place in the beautiful tranquil setting of Llangasty Retreat  House, Brecon, Powys from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th May 2023.

As always, it is a silent retreat and will be led by Fr Paul Hawkins, Associate Priest, All Saints, Clifton.  The cost is £210, and includes accommodation and all meals - breakfast/lunch and dinner.
